چکیده

We describe the optimum telescope focal ratio for a two-element, three-surface, telecentric image-transfer microlens-to-fiber coupled integral field unit within constraints imposed by microoptics fabrication and optical aberrations. create generalized analytical description of parameters from first principles. find that performance, including all aberrations, design constrained an analytic model considering only spherical aberration diffraction matches ± 4 % optimized ray-tracing software such as Zemax. The does not require any compromise on available clear aperture; about 90% mechanical aperture hexagonal microlens is light collection. f-ratio 200-μm core fiber-fed at f / 3.5 between 7 12. changes function fiber diameter input beam speed. A 8 would support largest range diameters (100 to 500 μm) injection speeds (between 3 5). optimization lenslet-coupled fibers relevant high-efficiency dedicated survey telescopes, retrofitting existing facilities via introducing macro-optics match instrument requirements.

Integral Field Spectrographs: a user’s view

We easily tend to think of Integral-Field Spectrographs (IFS) along two opposing trends: as either the beautiful combination between photometry and spectroscopy, or as our worst nightmare including the dark side of both worlds. I favour a view where each IFS is considered individually, as one instrument with specific performances which can be used optimally for a certain range of scientific pro...

The GMOS integral field unit : first integral field spectroscopy with an 8 m telescope

The Gemini Multiobject Spectrograph (GMOS) installed on the GeminiNorth telescope has a facility for integral field spectroscopy over the wavelength range 0.4−1.0μm. GMOS is converted to this mode by the remote insertion of an integral field unit (IFU) into the beam in place of the masks used for multiobject spectroscopy. With the IFU deployed, integral field spectroscopy is available over a fu...

Positioning errors and efficiency in fiber spectrographs

The use of wide-field multi-object fiber-input spectrographs for large redshift surveys introduces the possibility of variations in the observed signal-to-noise ratio across the survey area due to errors in positioning the fibers with respect to the target image positions, leading to position-dependent errors in the survey catalog. This paper brings together a comprehensive description of the s...

Techniques for reducing fiber - fed and integral - field spectroscopy data

The dates of receipt and acceptance should be inserted later This paper describes the general characteristics of raw data from fiber-fed spectrographs in general and fiber-fed IFUs in particular. The different steps of the data reduction are presented, and the techniques used to address the unusual characteristics of these data are described in detail. These techniques have been implemented in ...
